heart tree

The bees and I are celebrating today as St. Valentine is also the patron saint of beekeepers : ) Appropriately, February is also “national heart month”, so I thought it might be nice to talk about one of our loveliest of cardioprotective herbs: Hawthorn (Crataegus spp.).  We use both the hawthorn flowers and the berries for their hypotensive, vasodilatory, antioxidant and mild diuretic properties.  They can help with all sorts of circulatory problems from hypertension, angina, arteriosclerosis to Raynaud’s and rosacea.  These are its lovely, but curious-scented, flowers in spring:crataegus
