There are many willow trees near where I live and the wintry loss of their leaves means that you can now see their amazing and beautifully convoluted bark so much more clearly.  It is the bark that is used in herbal medicine – mainly for arthritis and gout.  Willow bark is anti-inflammatory and analgesic, however, care should be taken if you’re on anti-coagulant medications as willow’s salicylates (similar in structure to aspirin) may interact with these.
